Dressing up for casual black tie affairs

Dear Princess Darby,

Springtime is fast approaching, which means a good number of events and galas to attend. This year, I'm attending a couple of events in Chicago, LA and NYC, which are going a bit more casual than the black tie affairs they were previously.

My question is, what should I get to wear to these events? Is the classic black suit passe this year? What colors, styles and cuts are "fashionable" for gentlemen as far as business attire this season?

Also, are there economic alternatives for those of us on a budget?

Thanks!

Black or blue

Dear Black or blue,

Yes, spring will be here and usually invitations for the events are sent in January. So, hop on it so to speak, because I’m already looking into fall 2010!

The only differences in requirements for dress in the three cities you mentioned are time, venue, and weather.

Since this season the events you are attending are more casual than previous years, you have several options. What you plan to wear will be guided by the type of event, your build, and wallet…not to forget your style and comfort.

Cities like LA, NYC, and Chicago are edgier and this translates to wearing dark blue and black suites, leather jackets and dark denim jeans, or a jacquard two button tux jacket and flat front pants. Let’s not forget a fabulous shirt. White pleated front with or without a silk black skinny tie. Shoes, perhaps black dressy smooth leather lace-up, moccasin, oxford or patent slip on. NO BOOTS!

In a recent discussion with fashion stylist Sam Sok, we talked about wearing a black tee with jackets to give the look a little edge.

If you choose to wear a tux, don’t forget that designers have great looks out there that look like a suit. And, if you decide on a dark blue or black suit, please remember if you’re under 5’6” wear a one or two button for a longer, leaner look.

Now, my questions to you: Do you know where to wear your wallet? Do you need to match cufflinks to belt buckles? Should I ear a pocket square, if so how? And, where should you wear you cell phone? Got you thinking, don’t I? That’s another letter!

Now, where to shop without breaking the bank? Everyone can achieve their own personal look with comfort and style that won’t break the bank! Designer outlet malls, national discount stores, and high end designer consignment shops offer great looks at a fraction of the cost.

Watch the bling, and have fun. You’ll only look as great as you feel and I mean wear comfy shoes for any post cocktail dancing!
