Annapolis, Maryland — Last week, Maryland's house passed a gay marriage bill by just one vote. This week, that same bill should have smoother sailing in the Maryland state senate.

The bill, which is supported by Gov. Martin O'Malley, has to go through the senate's Judicial Proceedings Committee before it's brought on to the floor for a vote.

Those committee meetings usually happen on Thursdays, reported the Washington Times, but this week they might make an exception.

Last year, a same-sex marriage bill passed the Maryland state senate by a 25 to 21 vote. This year, the same 24 Democrats and one Republican are expected to continue their support.

Opponents of gay marriage in Maryland have basically given up on stopping this bill, and are now focused on getting 55,736 signatures necessary to create a ballot referendum on the issue.
