Déjà K. Taylor

Jerry Nunn talks to the Chicago singing sensation before her video debut on March 30

by Jerry Nunn

JN: (Jerry Nunn) Hey, Déjà. After watching the new video teaser on YouTube it looks like tons of fun.

DT: (Déjà K. Taylor) Thank you. We had a lot of fun making it.

JN: How did DiDa Ritz become your fairy drag mother in the video?

DT: DiDa and Big Dipper were old theater friends of mine back when I was in high school. It was all of the universes collapsing in on each other divinely. It all came together. I reached out to DiDa she was always in mind for putting "Superbad" together as a visual piece. It was my dream so I was thrilled she could be a part of it.

JN: Had you worked with About Face Theatre in the past?

DT: I did. About Face is part of my very electric high school experience. I really grew as an actor through their program. They do excellent work. We all did work with the Home Project, even the producer of my video, Paula Gilovich. She's like a fairy godmother in a way because she was the one that brought us all together. Paula has been a mentor of mine since I was fifteen.

JN: You seemed very Azealia Banks after the makeover in the video.

DT: I love Azealia. She's another Gemini rapping queen like myself.

JN: I saw you perform at the You Are Going to Die concert at the Metro. You are good at working a crowd.

DT: Thank you. I really feed off the energy of all of the folks there. I am super passionate. I am SpongeBob AbsorbPants when it comes to the energy. I just want to give it all back!

JN: Are you performing a few songs at Parlour?

DT: Yes, I will be doing songs at Parlour, also Shea Coulee will be performing as well as Roy Kinsey. I am just blessed in that respect. I have brilliantly gifted crazy friends. I will do a few tracks, some oldies, and some newbies.

Superbad is another step toward the full album consumption that I'm releasing this summer. I'm very excited because it is the beginning and the opus of what I want to share.

JN: What is next for you?

DT: I will be in Chicago recording and setting up video treatments for the things coming up on this next project. As soon as we get the finals on the album cover then I will be releasing the title.

I will be booking more shows in Chicago. I anticipate shows in New York and California as well. The Gemini anticipates some great detours at some point that I won't be able to pass up.

JN: Where can people catch up with you?

DT: Fans can follow me on Twitter @Dejaktaylor. I can't wait to meet everyone in 3-D at my show!

Look for Déjà K. Taylor along with go-go dancers, host Love on Topknot and DJ Erik Roldan for a night of fun March 30 at Parlour on Clark, 6341 N. Clark at 10:30 p.m. with a $3.00 donation at the door.
